This is EG! He is at the Gulf Shores Zoo in AL! He is a personabl little fella, with tons of character. He follows his keeper around and gives her sticks, and I have fallen in love with him. 

He is missing a wing because he was hit by a car. A motercyclist found him in his ditch and brought him to the vet, who fixed him up (His wing had to be amputated) and gave him to the zoo. He wanders around this big exhibit with a huge pond and plenty of other birds. (Many are rescues, among them massive mute swans.)

EG stands for electroglide. He’s an older pelican, but I adore him.

in the real life deer are about as smart as 4-year-olds. they have communication, planning, and cause-and-effect intelligence. we’re also selectively breeding for smarter and smarter deer - and recently deer have been observed teaching their young to watch for traffic. 

in my experience this makes deer just as wise as most frat boys.

yeah the boy scouts allowing trans boys in is great! but don’t forget that girl scouts have allowed (and encouraged!) trans girls joining since forever and that girl scouts was created in DIRECT opposition to boy scouts as a liberal and feminist organization to symbolize a big fuck you to the gross, conservative misogynist organization that boy scouts was (and continue to be)

The founder of Girl Scouts of America, Juliette Gordon Lowe, was a product of the Post Civil War South and admitted to being racist. But she wasn’t okay with it. She continued to force herself to confront her racism with an eye of self-criticism and to act contrary to her learned behavior. One time there was a parade where the local Girl Scouts were invited to march. At the time segregation was the norm and when the black Girl Scouts asked to participate the white troop leaders objected. They took their argument all the way to Juliette Gordon Lowe, expecting her to back them up, but Juliette Gordon Lowe supported the black Scouts and said that every girl, regardless of their race or ethnicity, should be allowed and encouraged to participate.

Juliette Gordon Lowe wasn’t perfect, but she always tried to better herself. She wanted the organization to do the same.

By saying “teach them both the same skills” that doesn’t just mean “teach girls to light shit on fire and survive in the wilderness!” It also means “teach boys to sew! Teach boys how to gently educate young children of all genders! Teach boys more collaborative activities in which there is no one with more power than anyone else!”

Listen, in the Girl Scouts we were talking about inequality. We talk about body image. We talk about sexual assault, discrimination of all kinds, we talk about how the media twists our thoughts and feelings about the world and about ourselves. Let the Boy Scouts do the same. Let them talk about their feelings. Let them know when it is good to step up and be a leader, and when it is good to not let anyone be a singular leader.

And yeah, teach more girls to light shit on fire and survive in the wilderness.

Okay, but I don’t know about you guys but I Def learned survival skills (hiking, plant ID, tracking, fires, wood cutting, first aid, even star orientiering) in girl scouts as well as homemaking skills, tech skills, crafting, sales, body image, and more.

Really, I feel like Boy Scouts just gets recognition because it’s Boys. Girl Scouts has been teaching more and upping the ante all the time, they even have an acceptance policy that blows boy scouts out of the water and had that long before the boy scouts started inclusion practices. Girl scouts is amazing but gets zero recognition because we’re girls, not because what we learn is less useful.

So I used to be a Girl Scout, and my brother a Boy Scout. He also used to be a program director for both scouting organizations at one time or another. So I have a lot to say on this.

Girl Scouts ARE learning the same important skills as boys, and even more importantly ones that will help them in their careers in the future. Leadership, teamwork, task management, etc. You think cookies are just about fund-raising? No, the girls are learning about marketing and sales. About quotas and business. About how to succeed.

The boy scouts absolutely need to be taught the same skills as the girls, because the girls have already made that leap forward, especially where it comes to identity and human rights.

My brother left working with Boy Scouts to bring the kind of awesome programs he’d done and learned and taught with the boys. His Girl Scout troops did some incredible things and it’s happening all across the country.

Like drdandy said, the boys just get more recognition because they’re boys.

Hi! I’ve been both so just like to add my two cents to this.

I was a Girl Scout for seven years, then part of the co-ed Boy Scout sub organization for another six, and now I staff at a Boy Scout camp. Both organizations started off with very similar objectives, and in many ways they’ve kept those. But they have also drifted over time. Here my reasons that the two branches of scouting are percieved so differently:

  • Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts vary drastically at both the organizational and troop levels. Boy Scouts as an organization is known for their homophobia and religious emphasis, and Girl Scouts at the same level for supporting girls and promoting equality. Both ahve the goal of teaching children necessary skills. The thing is, troops have a lot of individual freedoms, and don’t have to stick strictly to these ideals. I’ve known Boy Scout troops to quietly let in gay scouts, Girl Scout troops to be fans of traditional family values. People vary so much and troops vary so much, it’s hard to make generalizations about either organization.
  • That being said, variations in advancing requirements do drastically affect the actions of troops. In Boy Scouts, to advance ranks, a boy must earn a certain amount of merit badges, learn a given number of skills, and go on many outings. This is an organizational requirement. Meanwhile in Girl Scouts, to rank up all a girl must do is get older. Without a good troop leader, there’s no real incentive for activities and merit badges, and this can affect the actions of troops - why do a lot of work for something that has no point? The reason I left Girl Scouts was that I wanted to earn merit badges, to go camping - but that was too much pointless effort for our adult leaders. Of course, this is not the same for all troops, as one of myy best friend’s girl scout troop went on many camping, backpacking, and other high adventure outings.
  • A final difference is the support system in the troops. A Girl Scout troop is a group of girls who are all the same age. They start a troop together, rank up together, and go until the troop disbands or they all turn 18 and age out, at which point the troop is no more. A Boy Scout troop is boys of ages 11-17, with boys continually aging out and joining. This means that some boy scout troops have been around for 100 years, and have had that much time to figure out a leadership system, accumulate money, and create a system to help boys rank up and earn their Eagles. Girl Scout troops do not have that. Each troop is started from scratch. Earning money is harder (we only keep about 1/8 of the cookie money) and we do not have the system to earn our Gold awards, the equivalent to the Eagle. It’s expected that Boy Scouts earn their Eagle, and they get a ceremony when they do. Girl Scouts get almost no recognition for Gold.
So that’s what I have to say on that, feel free to ask me questions if you have any!

Backing this up with my own two cents and personal experience!

I have been active in both organizations, as a lifelong Girl Scout and Gold Award recipient, and as both the younger sister of an Eagle Scout and the VP of a Venture Crew. In my experience, Girl Scouts is better on the administrative level, and in terms of progressiveness and acceptance, while Boy Scouts is better in terms of its actual activities. It varies based on troops, but I was in four different Girl Scout troops and that was the general experience I had.

Also, when I got my Gold Award? I absolutely had my parents throw me an Eagle-Scout-style Court of Honor. One of my brother’s former Scoutmasters pulled me aside and told me that I should stand up with the Eagle’s Nest at any future Eagle Courts of Honor I attend, and I do, every time.

I feel like the Girl Genius fandom deserves to know that the only person I’ve ever convinced to read the comic is my half brother (he’s caught up to like getting to Paris), and he came out of it with the shipping opinion that none of the boys in the comic are good enough for Agatha. He ships her with world domination and Gil/Tarvek if it will keep them sufficiently distracted.
